Speaker Oboth Appeals to Archbishop Kaziimba to Remain a Guiding Voice Post-Retirement

Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oboth Oboth, has made a public appeal to Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda, urging him not to withdraw from public discourse following his retirement next year. The Speaker highlighted that Uganda will continue to require Kaziimba’s influential moral voice and leadership guidance.

This heartfelt plea was delivered during a farewell ceremony held for Archbishop Kaziimba in Tororo on Sunday. The Archbishop is set to retire on August 15, 2027, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. The event saw hundreds of Christians from the Bukedi Diocese gather to honor Kaziimba’s seven years of service.

Oboth lauded the Archbishop for his consistent advocacy on issues of peace, security, national unity, and accountable leadership. He stated that Kaziimba’s interventions have played a crucial role in shaping the conduct of those in public service. “One of your greatest gifts to Uganda has been your voice,” Oboth remarked, adding that the Archbishop’s firm moral stance has instilled confidence in leaders to act rightly, even in challenging circumstances.

The Speaker further stressed that while leadership positions are temporary, the obligation to serve society endures. He implored Kaziimba to “keep reminding us of our responsibilities as leaders” even after he steps down from his official duties.

The farewell ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Members of Parliament and Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tororo. Christians present celebrated their spiritual leader, attributing to him a significant role in fostering peace, unity, and reconciliation.

Archbishop Kaziimba, in his address, cautioned against rising animosity and division within Ugandan society, calling for a collective heart-change and a rejection of violence in favor of unity, irrespective of tribal affiliations.
