Step-sons jailed for abusing and encroaching on widow's land in Butaleja

In a significant ruling, the Butaleja Magistrate’s Court has handed down prison sentences to two step-sons for their mistreatment of their widowed stepmother and for encroaching on her property.

Jaleta Abdu, 36, and Buyele Hussein, 34, both from Nabiganda Town Council in Butaleja District, were found guilty of domestic violence and land-related offenses against 52-year-old Nambuya Amina. The court heard that on October 23, 2025, the accused unlawfully removed boundary marks delineating Nambuya’s land. Furthermore, they subjected her to emotional, psychological, economic, and physical abuse, jeopardizing her safety.

Both men pleaded guilty and sought leniency from the court. Buyele expressed remorse and apologized to his stepmother, attributing his actions to ignorance. He was sentenced to six months for domestic violence and an additional seven months for removing boundary marks. Jaleta received a six-month sentence for his role in the domestic violence.

The court was informed that Nambuya lost her husband in July 2025, after 25 years of marriage. According to prosecution, the step-sons had already sold their own land portions and then allegedly turned their attention to Nambuya, demanding she vacate her matrimonial home, citing her childlessness with the deceased.

Nambuya initially sought recourse from local council leaders, who subsequently directed the matter to the Butaleja Police. This led to the arrest and prosecution of the two men.

Sandra Abbo, Nambuya’s legal representative from Redeem International, commended the court’s decision, stating it offers much-needed relief to the widow after a protracted dispute. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence against women and land disputes affecting widows in the region.
