The Tororo Sam-Owori Rotary Club has thrown its support behind the national effort to fund the completion of the Uganda Cancer Institute, located at Nsambya Hospital. The club joined fellow Rotary chapters across the country in the annual Cancer Run, an initiative aiming to raise over Shs6 billion for the vital healthcare facility.
The event in Tororo saw a significant turnout, with hundreds of participants commencing a five-kilometre run from the Tororo Municipal Council grounds. The run attracted a diverse crowd, including community members, healthcare professionals, and local leaders, all united in their commitment to raising awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.
Joel Wabulo, president of the Tororo Sam-Owori Rotary Club, reported a successful fundraising drive, noting that the club exceeded its initial target of selling 400 Cancer Run kits by selling 600.
Participants highlighted the timeliness of the Cancer Run, referencing the escalating number of cancer cases reported nationwide. Tororo District Health Officer Onyango Jagire described the situation as alarming, stating, “Cancer is a problem. Everything is like we are in an epidemic.” Nicholas Owino, the Tororo County North MP, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for increased investment in specialized cancer services to ensure Ugandans have access to adequate detection and treatment facilities.
The Tororo Sam-Owori Rotary Club plans to continue its fundraising efforts to contribute to the overall Shs6 billion goal. Wabulo encouraged ongoing public support, mentioning that contributions can be made via Goza Pay Hub or directly at any Centenary Bank branch.
