Uganda Railways: Enhancing Passenger Experience is Key to Revival

Commuting in and around Kampala presents a daily challenge for many Ugandans, involving careful consideration of cost, time, and safety. The introduction of the passenger train offered a glimpse of a more reliable and affordable public transport solution. However, with a recent crackdown on unroadworthy taxis leading to a surge in train passengers, the service is becoming uncomfortably crowded.

Passengers are now experiencing a squeeze that mirrors the very problems they sought to escape. The ideal railway experience should include adequate seating space, comfortable seats with sufficient legroom, and the ability to move safely between coaches. For longer journeys, clean and functional toilets, proper ventilation, and well-maintained coaches are essential. To manage the increased demand and prevent revenue loss, an improved ticketing system is crucial, addressing issues where some passengers may be traveling without payment.

Modern technology could significantly enhance the passenger journey. Digital screens displaying upcoming stops and expected arrival times would reduce confusion. The inclusion of charging points for electronic devices and reliable internet access would allow commuters to utilize their travel time productively, whether for work or staying connected.

The passenger experience should extend beyond the train itself. Waiting areas at stations need to be clean, safe, and sheltered, with adequate seating. Clear announcements are needed for train arrivals, and proper lighting and security are paramount, especially during early morning and late evening hours.

Furthermore, accessibility must be a priority. Features like ramps and accessible platforms are necessary to ensure that all passengers, including children, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges, can board and disembark safely. While keeping fares affordable is vital, it should not come at the expense of overcrowding. Regulating noise pollution and hawking on trains would also improve the overall atmosphere.

Plans to expand commuter rail services to surrounding areas should be realized to accommodate Kampala’s growing population. The current situation demonstrates that Ugandans are receptive to public transport that is dependable, economical, and punctual. The goal should be to elevate the railway service beyond mere capacity increases, focusing instead on providing a dignified, comfortable, and efficient journey for all passengers.
