Uganda Railways Expands Services with New Lunchtime and Evening Trains

Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is enhancing public transportation options with the addition of new passenger train trips along the Kampala-Namanve-Mukono corridor. Effective August 31, 2026, commuters will benefit from expanded service times, including a new lunchtime departure and an additional evening trip.

The lunchtime service is scheduled to depart from Kampala at 1:30 PM, reaching Namanve at 2:00 PM and Mukono by 2:30 PM. The return journey from Mukono will commence at 3:00 PM. Complementing this, a new evening service will depart Mukono at 6:30 PM, with a second departure at 6:40 PM, arriving in Kampala at 7:40 PM.

These new services aim to provide greater flexibility for passengers who may not be able to utilize the existing morning and evening schedules. The URC confirmed that current morning services, including the 6:30 AM departure from Mukono and the 8:15 AM departure from Namanve, will continue to operate as usual. An evening service from Kampala to Namanve will depart at 5:30 PM.

In addition to the expanded timetable, URC has introduced a new passenger coach designed for seated passengers only, eliminating standing room to improve comfort. These developments are part of URC’s broader strategy to expand and improve commuter services within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, offering a viable alternative to road travel and alleviating traffic congestion.

Fares for the ordinary coaches remain unchanged at Shs2,000 for the commuter service. Executive coach fares are set at Shs5,000 for the Kampala-Mukono route and Shs4,000 for Kampala-Namanve. The ongoing rehabilitation of the Kampala-Mukono railway line is a key component of URC’s commitment to enhancing railway transport and meeting the growing demand for affordable public transit.
