Ugandans Deserve Clean Water: A Right Unfulfilled

A recent report in the Daily Monitor has shed light on the critical issue of water access in Uganda, revealing that many citizens are still struggling to obtain clean and safe water for daily use.

The situation is particularly dire in the Busoga Sub-region, where residents are reportedly forced to draw water from sources also used by livestock and for washing vehicles. This practice exposes them to a cocktail of waterborne diseases.

This grim reality is not isolated to Busoga; it reflects a broader challenge across the nation. The lack of readily available safe water sources forces individuals to consume water contaminated with animal waste and other pollutants. This directly contributes to the spread of preventable diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.

Access to clean water is universally recognized as a fundamental human right. It is incumbent upon the government to ensure this right is upheld for all citizens, utilizing tax revenues to fund essential water infrastructure projects. The current scenario not only endangers public health but also represents a financial drain, as considerable resources are spent treating waterborne illnesses.

Investing in clean water infrastructure offers a dual benefit: it saves lives by preventing diseases and frees up public funds that can be redirected to other vital sectors such as education and healthcare. A healthier population is also a more productive one, capable of contributing more significantly to economic growth and improved living standards for all.
