The MTN Busoga Masaza Cup saw regional rivalries ignite this past Sunday, with Bugweri and Bukooli Namayingo settling for a share of the points in a hard-fought match. The encounter at Buseesa Mixed Primary School was an open affair, with both teams creating chances. Bugweri came close to opening the scoring in the 25th minute when Tom Babalanda missed a headed opportunity.
Bugweri’s coach, Umar Kiyemba, reflected on strategic halftime substitutions, admitting they almost backfired. He also addressed the decision to bench captain Ismail Kagere due to lateness, emphasizing team discipline. Namayingo’s coach, Yasin Were, felt his team was unfortunate not to secure a win, praising goalkeeper performance against his attacking strategies.
Meanwhile, Bukooli Bugiri secured their first three points of the tournament with a narrow 2-1 victory over Busiki at Bukooli College. Daniel Maganda put Bugiri ahead early, only for Sulaiman Kitente to equalize for Busiki just before halftime. However, Martin Okoth swiftly restored Bugiri’s lead in the opening minute of the second half, a lead they held onto for the win.
Following these results, Namayingo tops the Nendha Group with four points, ahead of Bugweri on goal difference. Bugiri sits third with three points, while Busiki remains at the bottom without any points. The tournament continues with several fixtures scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, culminating in Saturday’s matches.
