Cancer Run Exceeds Fundraising Goal, Secures Over Shs5 Billion for Treatment Centre

The 15th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run has achieved a significant milestone, raising more than Shs5 billion and exceeding its 2027 fundraising target. This considerable sum is earmarked for the completion and equipping of a dedicated cancer treatment center located at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.

Thousands of Ugandans across Kampala and 62 other towns participated in the recent event, demonstrating widespread support for the cause. Campaign organizers are now ahead of schedule, allowing them to transition from solely focusing on fundraising to the crucial next steps: acquiring necessary equipment and training healthcare professionals to operate the facility.

Beyond the Nsambya center, Rotary has ambitious plans to extend specialized cancer care to other regions. Initiatives to support cancer centers in Arua and Kasese are in the pipeline, aiming to bring treatment closer to patients outside the capital.

The campaign, themed “Let’s run to restore hope,” emphasizes early detection, awareness, and response. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi highlighted the growing cancer burden in Uganda, noting that many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options. He urged citizens to prioritize prevention, healthy lifestyles, and regular screenings.

Centenary Bank, a long-standing platinum sponsor, contributed Shs500 million this year, bringing their total support to approximately Shs3 billion over 14 years. Numerous other partners also contributed to the run’s success.

The ultimate victory of the Rotary Cancer Run lies not just in the funds raised but in the tangible impact on patient care through advanced facilities, skilled personnel, and the hope offered by early diagnosis and effective treatment.
