Singer Cindy Sanyu has offered a candid perspective on what it truly takes to become a big star in the Ugandan music scene. She asserts that while awards and media attention can be beneficial, they are secondary to the fundamental support of ordinary fans.

According to Sanyu, an artist’s journey to prominence should begin with building a strong connection at the grassroots level. She explained that media outlets and journalists are more inclined to feature artists who have already demonstrated an ability to draw crowds and generate buzz among the general public.

“Someone will give you an interview because they saw you attract five people at Owino or ten people somewhere talking about you, so it starts with the normal people,” Sanyu stated, highlighting the importance of early engagement with local audiences.

She cautioned artists against losing touch with their core fanbase, warning that neglecting this connection can ultimately erode an artist’s relevance, even if they maintain a significant presence in the media. Sanyu clarified that television appearances, interviews, and paid advertisements serve to amplify an existing fanbase rather than create one from scratch.

“Let’s stay with our people on the ground. The people on TV first see that you’re attracting numbers down here and say you’re a star. It doesn’t come from TV and all these ads that you pay for, it comes from genuine love from these normal people,” she emphasized.

Sanyu’s insights come at a time when discussions about artist success in Uganda’s competitive music industry are ongoing, offering a grounded perspective on building a sustainable career.
