Duane 'Keffe D' Davis Convicted in 1996 Murder of Rapper Tupac Shakur

A jury in Las Vegas has convicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, of murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the 1996 killing of rap superstar Tupac Shakur. Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by incident on September 7, 1996, at the peak of his influential career. The case had remained one of America’s most prominent unsolved mysteries for nearly 30 years.

Prosecutors argued that while Davis did not fire the fatal shots, he orchestrated the murder and supplied the weapon. The shooting was reportedly in retaliation for an earlier physical altercation involving Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, and Shakur’s entourage.

Davis’s own public admissions played a crucial role in the conviction. Over the years, he had repeatedly discussed his involvement in Shakur’s death in media interviews, documentaries, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” A key piece of evidence was a 2008 police interview where Davis admitted his role, which ultimately invalidated a prior protective agreement with authorities that had prevented charges.

Despite Davis’s defense team attempting to discredit his statements as mere storytelling or “bravado” to sell books, the jury found his admissions compelling. The conviction brings a long-awaited resolution for Shakur’s family and fans.

Davis, 63, maintained his innocence and has stated his intention to appeal the verdict. Sentencing is scheduled for October 13.
