Duane 'Keffe D' Davis convicted of murder in Tupac Shakur's 1996 killing

A jury in Las Vegas has convicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, of first-degree murder in connection with the 1996 assassination of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. The conviction follows an 11-day trial and deliberation of nearly three hours by the Clark County jury.

Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, faced charges related to the drive-by shooting that ended Shakur’s life. The prosecution argued that Davis orchestrated the attack in retaliation for the beating of his nephew by Shakur’s entourage. Under Nevada law, Davis can be held responsible for murder even if he did not personally fire the fatal shots.

Crucially, the prosecution’s case relied heavily on Davis’s own public statements. Taped confessions from secret meetings with investigators, interviews, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” were presented as evidence. These accounts detailed his alleged involvement in seeking out Shakur and authorizing the shooting.

Davis’s defense team contended that his memoir was fiction and that the evidence was unreliable, citing potential police corruption and missing files. Despite these arguments, the jury found Davis guilty. He faces a potential sentence of life in prison without parole and is expected to appeal the decision.

The murder of Tupac Shakur remains a significant event in hip-hop history, representing a peak in the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry of the 1990s.
