Following the intense competition of the Uganda Amateur Open, golfers and guests gathered at the Uganda Golf Club for an evening of vibrant cultural celebration dubbed “Johnnie Walker Afro Exchange.” The event provided a relaxed atmosphere for participants to unwind and connect, moving beyond the fairways to embrace the continent’s diverse heritage.
The “19th hole” experience, hosted by media personality Deedan, was a sensory delight. The air was filled with a curated mix of Ugandan and pan-African music, expertly spun by DJ Van. The evening’s soundtrack included the latest release from rising star Joshua Baraka, who is also the new face of Johnnie Walker’s “Keep Walking” campaign in Uganda.
Beyond the music, the celebration embraced an Afro-inspired dress code, with attendees showcasing their style. A culinary journey complemented the visual and auditory experiences, featuring an East African-themed buffet that offered a taste of the region’s rich flavors.
Moses Matsiko, former president of the Uganda Golf Union, highlighted the significance of such gatherings. He emphasized that these events foster fellowship, recognizing that beyond the competition, golfers are united by shared friendships and cultural connections.
Adding to the electrifying atmosphere, dancehall artist Karole Kasita delivered a high-energy performance, engaging the audience with her popular hits. Her performance encouraged guests to join in, creating a lively and interactive celebration.
“Golf is synonymous with our Keep Walking platform because the game is as much about the journey as it is about the destination,” explained a Johnnie Walker representative, underscoring the brand’s connection between personal journeys and the spirit of exploration. The Afro Exchange aims to extend this ethos, bringing people together through shared cultural experiences.
The successful Afro Exchange followed a competitive Amateur Open, where Zambia’s Dominic Musonda claimed the championship title. The focus now shifts to the professional leg of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open, commencing with the Absa Pro-Am.
This event was a testament to Johnnie Walker’s commitment to celebrating both athletic achievement and the rich tapestry of African culture. The Afro Exchange provided a memorable closing to the amateur segment, setting a tone of unity and celebration.
