Kawempe Muslim Makes History as First Ugandan Club to Win CECAFA Women's Champions League Qualifiers

Kawempe Muslim etched their name in Ugandan football history this week, emerging victorious in the CECAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers held in Kigali, Rwanda. The “Valley Warriors” triumphed over Kenya Police Bullets with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in extra time, marking them as the first Ugandan club to claim this prestigious regional title and qualify for the continental championship.

The final match was a tense affair, with both teams demonstrating strong defensive capabilities. After a goalless 90 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken in the 100th minute. Captain Agnes Nabukenya, who was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), scored the decisive goal. She reacted swiftly to a loose ball from a free-kick, slotting it past the Bullets’ goalkeeper.

Throughout the tournament, Kawempe Muslim showcased impressive form, winning all four of their matches without conceding a single goal. Their campaign included a dominant 8-0 victory over FC Ujeco and a 3-0 win against CBE in the semi-finals, a match that served as revenge for a previous loss. Nabukenya was a standout performer, contributing crucial goals alongside Jovia Nakagolo.

For Kenya Police Bullets, this loss represented a third consecutive failed attempt to reach the Caf Women’s Champions League, highlighting the competitive nature of the qualification process. Despite their efforts and the dangerous threat posed by former Kawempe winger Margaret Kunihira, they couldn’t overcome Kawempe’s resilient defense and timely offensive push.

Kawempe Muslim’s historic achievement signifies a significant step forward for women’s football in Uganda, setting a new benchmark for clubs aiming for continental success.
