Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC has etched their name in Ugandan football history by securing a maiden qualification for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.
The club clinched this landmark achievement after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya Police Bullets in the final of the CECAFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers, which were held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The decisive goal came in the 100th minute of extra time, courtesy of Agnes Nabukenya. Her strike broke the deadlock after a tense 90 minutes that saw both teams unable to find the back of the net, pushing the final into an additional period.
Despite creating chances, including a notable free-kick opportunity for Nabukenya in the first half and a late surge from Jovia Nakagolo in the second, Kawempe Muslim could not convert during regular play. The pressure mounted as the prospect of a continental berth loomed.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Anita Namata’s header found its way into the six-yard box, where Nabukenya reacted quickest to outmaneuver the Kenyan goalkeeper and secure the historic goal.
Head coach Khalifa Ayub expressed immense pride in his team’s accomplishment. “I am really happy. This was my first time to play the finals, and I am very happy that I am going to play at a higher level,” he stated, anticipating the challenge of competing against Africa’s elite.
Kawempe Muslim’s dominance in the qualifiers was further recognized with individual accolades. Goalkeeper Saidat Namwanje was named Best Goalkeeper, while captain Agnes Nabukenya received the Most Valuable Player award.
The team’s remarkable journey through the qualifiers was characterized by an unbeaten run and a flawless defensive record, having not conceded a single goal. This success adds to their already impressive domestic record, which includes six Women Super League titles.
This historic qualification not only provides Kawempe Muslim with a platform to test their mettle against the continent’s best but also significantly boosts the profile of women’s football in Uganda.
