Kawempe Muslim Secures Historic Spot in CAF Women's Champions League

Kawempe Muslim has etched their name in Ugandan football history by becoming the first team from the nation to qualify for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League finals. Their historic qualification was secured by a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya Police Bullets in the 2026 Cecafa Zonal Qualifiers held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The decisive goal came in the 100th minute of extra time, courtesy of captain Agnes Nabukenya, who capitalized on a second ball from a free-kick. This triumph marks a significant milestone for the school-based club, which has been a cornerstone of women’s football development in Uganda for over 25 years.

Head coach Ayub Khalifah lauded the tactical flexibility and depth of his squad. During the tournament, players adapted to new roles with aplomb. Jovia Nakagolo, typically a winger, excelled as a striker, netting twice in the semi-final. Asia Nakibuuka, also a winger in the league, returned to a left-back position, providing mature and disciplined defensive displays. The team’s defensive solidity was further highlighted by conceding no goals throughout the four games, with goalkeeper Saidat Namwanje earning the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

Khalifah also commended the strong technical team that managed the squad in his temporary absence. “The coaching team is comprised of individuals who really know what everyone has to do,” he stated, emphasizing the trust and synergy within his staff. This collective effort allowed Kawempe Muslim to maintain balance and execute their game plan effectively, whether pressing high against CBE or adopting a disciplined defensive block against Kenya Police Bullets.

With this Cecafa Zonal Qualifiers title secured, Kawempe Muslim now sets its sights on the continental finals later this year. The club views the upcoming domestic league season as crucial preparation, aiming to further sharpen individual players and the team’s overall performance to compete at the highest level. The journey to the Champions League finals is a testament to Kawempe’s enduring legacy and commitment to advancing women’s football in Uganda.
