Mityana Mayor Calls for Stricter Mast Regulations Amid Health Concerns

Mityana Municipality Mayor Faustine Mukambwe Lukonge has called for a stronger government hand in regulating the placement and construction of communication masts. His concerns are particularly focused on densely populated residential zones where proximity to homes could pose health risks.

Mayor Lukonge voiced these concerns during the 15th annual Rotary Cancer Run event held in Mityana District. He highlighted that radiation exposure from these masts, often erected near communities, could potentially lead to increased health issues, including cancer.

“Government needs to strengthen the regulation of communication masts, especially in residential areas. Communities need to be protected from possible health risks associated with exposure to radiation,” Lukonge stated during the event. He emphasized that public health should be a paramount consideration when establishing such infrastructure.

The Rotary Cancer Run itself is a nationwide initiative aimed at raising funds for a new cancer institute at St Francis Hospital Nsambya. The event also serves as a platform for raising public awareness about cancer prevention, screening, and the importance of early detection and treatment.

Viola Biryomumaisho, President of the Rotary Club of Mityana, stressed that the fight against cancer involves more than just fundraising. She noted that Rotarians are actively educating communities on understanding the disease and encouraging timely medical attention, underscoring that early action significantly improves outcomes.

Similarly, Rct. Rev. Joshua Ssali, President of the Rotary Club of Ssingo Mityana, urged the public to prioritize regular medical check-ups, stating that many lives could be saved through early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases.
