Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has voiced his opinion that bars and entertainment venues in Uganda should be allowed to set their own closing times. This stance appears to differ from recent proposals suggesting government-imposed regulations on operating hours for such establishments.
Gen. Muhoozi took to social media to express his view, arguing that the government’s primary concern should be the prevention of violence and public disorder, rather than dictating when businesses can operate. He stated that the decision on opening and closing hours should rest with the proprietors of these establishments.
“Opening and closing hours for bars and clubs is up to the proprietors. What we will not tolerate is any form of fighting and violence. Otherwise, Ugandans are entitled to enjoy themselves,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote, highlighting his belief in the public’s right to entertainment while stressing the importance of maintaining peace.
This position contrasts with remarks made by Minister Balaam Barugahara, who had reportedly proposed restrictions on the operating hours of entertainment venues. Gen. Muhoozi’s comments suggest a preference for a less interventionist approach, focusing on enforcing law and order rather than implementing blanket curfews.
The CDF’s remarks have already sparked discussion among Ugandans and those involved in the entertainment industry, with varying perspectives on how best to regulate nightlife while ensuring public safety and supporting businesses. The debate highlights different philosophies on balancing economic freedom with social order.
