Notable Women in the Life and Reign of the Late King Oyo of Tooro

The recent passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro, has brought to light the key female figures who played pivotal roles in his life and the administration of the kingdom. King Oyo ascended to the throne in 1995 at the tender age of three, following the untimely death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. During his minority, the kingdom was guided by a council of principal regents, a role prominently filled by his mother.

Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, born in 1967, served as a crucial regent from 1995 until King Oyo came of age in 2010. As the daughter of Prince Mujungu, she was instrumental in safeguarding and nurturing the young monarch. Beyond her regency, she has established herself as a notable advocate for women, children, and cultural leadership across Uganda and Africa.

Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, King Oyo’s sister, was officially recognized as the “Batebe” or “Princess Royal” in 1996. Born in 1989, she pursued education internationally and now resides in the United States, where she is involved in charity work supporting underprivileged children. After a previous marriage ended, she found love again and married Jamaican DJ Anthony Phil Amiooti in 2021, with whom she has a son, Prince Jamari Mathew Farquharson Adyeri.

Another significant female figure was Princess Cecilia Komukycya, King Oyo’s youngest sister. Her life was tragically cut short in 1997 at the age of four due to leukemia. Her memory is honored through the Princess Komuntale Foundation, which established the Princess Cecilia Komukycya and Cancer Treatment Fund, dedicated to supporting children battling cancer.

Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, a daughter of King George Rukidi III of Tooro and King Oyo’s paternal aunt, was also a key regent during the early years of his reign. A distinguished lawyer and former diplomat, Princess Bagaya played a vital role in the kingdom’s governance and leadership during the period of King Oyo’s minority. Her extensive experience in law and public service provided valuable guidance to the young king and the kingdom.

These women, through their diverse roles as mothers, sisters, regents, and advocates, significantly influenced King Oyo’s reign and the trajectory of the Tooro Kingdom. Their contributions underscore the important presence and impact of women in the historical and ongoing narrative of Ugandan monarchies.
