Pakistan Envoy Pledges to Promote Lango Investment Opportunities

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ashar Shahzad, has pledged to actively promote the investment prospects within the Lango Sub-region to Pakistani entrepreneurs and industrialists. This commitment stems from his observation of the area’s considerable potential and a receptive business environment.

Shahzad made these remarks during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations held in Lira City, an event that was notably combined with a successful blood donation drive organized by the Pakistan Association Lira. The envoy expressed admiration for the Pakistani community’s dedication to the socio-economic progress of Northern Uganda.

“I would be very pleased to disseminate information regarding this area to Pakistani businessmen, investors and industrialists to come and invest here,” Shahzad stated, emphasizing the importance of foreign investment for Uganda and Africa’s economic growth.

The dual event also saw a significant blood donation campaign, which collected an impressive 347 units. Muhammad Ateeq Nawaz, president of the Pakistan Association Lira, highlighted this as part of their broader community support initiatives in Lango, which encompass health, education, clean water, and humanitarian aid.

Nawaz further noted that Pakistani investors have already established over 25 factories in the sub-region, providing employment for local residents. He also shared that some members of the Pakistani community have been living and working in Lango for decades, contributing to local development through various projects.

Local business leaders, such as Fred Doi, chairperson of the Lira Chamber of Commerce and Industry, encouraged Pakistani investors to consider large-scale manufacturing, particularly in textiles and garments, leveraging the region’s cotton production. Other potential areas for investment include oilseed and cassava value addition.

Lawrence Egole, Lira City Resident Commissioner, viewed the envoy’s visit as a positive sign for strengthening Uganda-Pakistan relations and fostering trade and development in the region.

This visit coincides with a broader push to attract more investment into Northern Uganda, aiming to boost industrialization, create employment, and drive economic development. The event underscored the growing collaboration between local leaders, the business community, and the Pakistani diaspora.
