The Ugandan Parliament has officially conveyed its sorrow and solidarity with the Tooro Kingdom on the recent death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, addressing the House, characterized the monarch’s passing as a deeply painful event for the nation.
Oboth emphasized that the departure of a king signifies a loss felt not just by a family, but by an entire kingdom, its people, and the nation at large. He announced that a formal motion would be presented to honor King Oyo’s contributions to Tooro and Uganda, acknowledging the solemnity of the occasion where “a throne stands in mourning.”
Despite his young age at the time of his ascension to the throne and his untimely death, Speaker Oboth lauded King Oyo for leading an impactful life. He highlighted the late king’s remarkable journey, ascending to the throne at just three years old and maturing into a respected traditional leader over three decades. The Speaker noted that the measure of a life is determined by its legacy, not merely its duration.
King Oyo was particularly commended for his dedication to promoting cultural heritage, tourism, and environmental conservation. His Majesty’s ascent of the Margherita peak to advocate for the Rwenzori Mountains and raise awareness about climate change was cited as a significant achievement. Furthermore, his efforts in empowering the youth and utilizing international platforms to promote Tooro and Uganda were recognized.
The Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Rukia Nakadama, also offered her condolences, expressing sadness over the loss of such a “brilliant young king” at a tender age. Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence in tribute to the departed Omukama.
King Oyo passed away on August 27, 2026, while undergoing medical treatment in the United States. His remains are expected in Uganda on September 3, 2026, and will be taken to the Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal District, marking the beginning of a nine-day mourning period.
