Three Kenyans Convicted in Uganda for Immigration Offenses, Face Deportation Amid Murder Investigation

A magistrate’s court in Kampala, Uganda, has convicted three Kenyan citizens on immigration-related charges. Bett Kiplangat Collins, a police constable, businessman Pius Muiru Mbugua, and Samuel Karanja Gathoni, pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering and residing in Uganda without proper documentation.

The trio admitted to crossing into Uganda via the Busia border in August and subsequently staying in Kampala. They were sentenced to a caution by Senior Principal Magistrate Nicholas Aisu, who also ordered their deportation back to Kenya.

This conviction comes as Kenyan authorities are investigating the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29, 2026. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya alleges that a vehicle linked to the murder was traced to an apartment in Kampala, leading to the arrest of Kiplangat and Mbugua by the Uganda Police Force.

Karanja, who was apprehended separately in Nairobi, is also implicated by Kenyan investigators. The DCI has described the arrests as a significant breakthrough and has credited the Ugandan police for their cooperation. The three individuals are expected to be handed over to Kenyan authorities upon their return to face the murder allegations.
