Tooro Kingdom Prepares Royal Burial Sites for King Oyo's Interment

The Tooro Kingdom is undertaking extensive preparations at its ancestral burial grounds and official palace ahead of the interment of the late King Oyo. Works have begun at the Karambi Royal Tombs, the principal burial site for Tooro monarchs, and at Karuziika Palace, the kingdom’s administrative center.
Access to the Karambi Royal Tombs has been restricted to the public as teams work to prepare the grounds. The royal tombs, known as Amagasani, hold deep historical and cultural importance for the Batooro people and are the final resting place for previous kings, including King Oyo’s father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. The renovation efforts include improving access roads, landscaping, and preserving royal regalia.
Simultaneously, significant upgrades are underway at Karuziika Palace to accommodate the expected influx of mourners and dignitaries. These improvements include enhancing drainage systems, clearing the palace grounds, and grading the access road. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces Engineering Brigade is providing support for these government-assisted rehabilitation efforts.
King Oyo, who ascended to the throne at the age of three and reigned for over three decades, passed away on August 27th in the United States. His body is expected to arrive in Uganda on Thursday and will be transferred to Karuziika Palace, where it will remain until the conclusion of the mourning period and his eventual burial at Karambi alongside his royal predecessors.
