Tooro MPs Honor King Oyo's Legacy, Propose Cancer Institute

Legislators from the Tooro Parliamentary Forum have paid glowing tribute to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, remembering him as a monarch deeply committed to the progress of his kingdom. He is being hailed for his dedicated efforts in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS, championing environmental protection, and promoting tourism throughout Tooro.

During a press briefing at Parliament, the forum’s chairperson, Dr. Lawrence Akugizibwe, urged the people of Tooro to maintain unity and calm during this period of mourning. He emphasized that the late King was a significant symbol of Tooro’s identity, heritage, and continuity.

Dr. Akugizibwe also put forward a proposal for the government to establish a regional cancer centre in Fort Portal. He suggested that this facility be named the “King Oyo Cancer Institute” as a lasting tribute to the monarch’s legacy and his commitment to the welfare of his subjects.

The MPs highlighted King Oyo’s role as a pillar of cultural preservation, noting how he used his position to advocate for social transformation, youth empowerment, and the crucial task of environmental conservation. His efforts to restore Tooro’s vital forests and crater lakes, which are significant tourist attractions, were particularly commended.

While Parliament will officially honor the late King during a plenary session, Dr. Akugizibwe clarified that due to cultural rituals, the King’s body would not be brought to the House for public viewing. A motion is expected to be presented, reflecting on his notable 30-year reign and his contributions to national development.
