Tooro Royals Question Claims of King Oyo's Heir Amid Succession Concerns

A potential succession dispute is brewing in Tooro Kingdom following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The Babiito royal clan, through its head Omusuga Charles Kamurasi, has stated they were unaware of any son left behind by the late king until recently.

Kamurasi has challenged Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire to present the alleged heir for verification. He emphasized that succession matters must strictly follow the established traditions and procedures of the Tooro Kingdom. The clan head also criticized Rwomire for allegedly making decisions about the late king’s funeral and burial site without consulting the royal family or the Babiito clan.

Adding to the clan’s skepticism, Dan Rubombora, another member, questioned why the purported heir had not been introduced to the clan earlier. Rubombora pointed out that the authority to identify and announce a successor lies with the Omusuga. He also raised concerns about Queen Mother Best Kemigisa’s past appeals for King Oyo to marry and father an heir, which seem contradictory if she was already aware of a son.

President Yoweri Museveni, during his eulogy, expressed relief that the royal lineage would continue, citing information from Queen Mother Kemigisa about the existence of a son. However, he provided no further details on the heir or whether the Babiito clan had been formally informed or involved in verifying the child’s lineage.

Preparations for King Oyo’s funeral are proceeding while this succession question casts a shadow, highlighting the critical need for clarity on who holds the authority to determine the next occupant of the Tooro throne. A 21-member committee formed by the Babiito clan is reportedly ready to review all eligible candidates based on royal lineage, including the alleged son of King Oyo.
