Absa Pro-Am Elevates Ugandan Golf with Kenya Open Pathway and Government Support

The Absa Pro-Am tournament at the Uganda Golf Club is rapidly evolving beyond a mere prelude to the Uganda Open, now serving as a crucial platform for the development of professional golf in Uganda.

This year’s event saw a heightened sense of purpose, with the top five professionals and five amateurs earning an all-expenses-paid trip to the Magical Kenya Open Pro-Am early next year, courtesy of sponsor Absa. This opportunity provides Ugandan golfers a vital chance to compete and gain experience in a more competitive regional field.

Grace Kasango emerged as the top professional with 42 points, narrowly ahead of national star Ronald Rugumayo. Patricia Mbabazi also secured the top spot in the amateur category with an impressive 42 points. Beyond individual accolades, the tournament highlighted the growing number of professional golfers in Uganda, a trend celebrated by Absa Uganda Managing Director David Wandera, who pledged continued support and improved prize money.

The “Dew Sweepers” team, featuring Ronald Rugumayo, Paul Nuwagaba, Collins Nuwagira, and Diana Nabukenya, clinched the team competition with 109 points, earning Shs3.5 million and various prizes. Other teams also secured significant prize money, underscoring the event’s competitive spirit.

Adding significant weight to the tournament’s growing importance, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, announced the government’s commitment to increasing investment in golf. This includes enhancing facilities to attract major tournaments and potentially influencing prize funds for key events, drawing inspiration from Kenya’s support for its own Open.

The event also witnessed spectacular individual achievements, including two holes-in-one by Nelson Ojwiya and Gabrile Chibale, adding a memorable flair to the proceedings. The Absa Pro-Am is clearly solidifying its role as a developmental pipeline, offering exposure for amateurs, competition and rewards for professionals, and a valuable investment platform for sponsors.
