The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially announced that its chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, intends to compete for the presidency in the 2031 general elections. This marks a revival of his long-held presidential ambitions, which were previously set aside to support his father, President Yoweri Museveni, in the 2026 race.

David Kabanda, who heads the PLU chairman’s office, informed a gathering of Members of Parliament, PLU coordinators, and supporters that Gen. Muhoozi’s 2031 bid has the full backing of President Museveni. Kabanda emphasized that this presidential ambition is not a point of conflict but a sanctioned endeavor.

“I’m here to inform you that Gen Muhoozi has instructed me to inform you that he is going to run for President of Uganda in 2031 and beyond,” Kabanda stated, eliciting a strong positive response from the attendees.

The PLU plans to launch nationwide endorsement rallies across Uganda’s 146 districts to gather the required signatures. The organization aims to secure victory with a significant margin, targeting 90 percent of the vote. Members wishing to participate in the signature collection must seek approval from Gen. Muhoozi.

Kabanda drew parallels to the early days of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), highlighting that the PLU, despite its current size, can achieve victory, just as the NRM did with a small initial group.

PLU’s director for mobilization, Michael Mawanda, also an MP, indicated that further steps will be revealed after collecting 19 million signatures. He mentioned that Gen. Muhoozi would eventually retire from the army, unveil his manifesto, and commence campaigning prior to the 2031 elections.

Local officials present, including Deputy RDC Twaibu Achile and MP Stephenson Yoyo Lokoru, expressed their support, viewing Gen. Muhoozi as a potential leader who can accelerate Uganda’s development and combat corruption.
