Government Urges Caution on Tooro Succession Speculation

The government is urging the public to disregard unverified information circulating on social media regarding the succession of the late Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde, stated that formal communication on the transition will be made following consultations with President Yoweri Museveni and the Tooro Kingdom’s cultural leadership.
Gen. Tumukunde emphasized the importance of relying on official channels for information, warning against the spread of unsubstantiated claims. He confirmed that the process will adhere to Section 15 of the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act 2011, which provides a framework for managing any potential disputes during the succession.
“The public should be cautious about information circulating on social media, and you should rely on official communications from government and Tooro Kingdom,” Gen. Tumukunde advised during a press briefing at the late king’s royal residence in Buziga, Kampala.
He also highlighted that Uganda is under international observation as the nation prepares to bury its monarch. The government called for maturity, restraint, and hospitality towards visiting dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, and international media, showcasing Uganda as a peaceful and dignified nation.
President Museveni has directed that the late Omukama receive an official burial. An Inter-Ministerial Committee, coordinated by the Prime Minister and overseen by the Office of the President, is working closely with Tooro Kingdom leadership on state arrangements for the funeral.
