Kasese Ramps Up El Niño Preparedness Amidst Rising Flood Concerns

Authorities in Kasese District are taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact of potential floods, landslides, and mudslides, as the region anticipates heightened rainfall associated with the El Niño weather pattern. These preparations are crucial given the district’s history of devastating natural disasters that have claimed lives, displaced communities, and destroyed vital infrastructure.

The district’s geographical makeup, characterized by mountainous terrain, fragile soils, and numerous rivers, makes it particularly susceptible to heavy rainfall. Local leaders are focusing on strengthening preparedness by assessing vulnerable areas and implementing early action strategies. “We are therefore not waiting for disasters to happen. We are encouraging communities and leaders to take early action and prepare for any eventuality,” stated Mustafa Kikusa, Chairperson of the Kasese District Disaster Committee.

A significant concern is River Nyamwamba, which has repeatedly caused extensive damage and displacement in Kasese Municipality. Mayor Chance Kahindo has urged residents living near the river and other at-risk zones to heed warnings and cooperate with evacuation plans. “Those living in dangerous areas must cooperate with authorities and take precautionary evacuation,” he advised.

To aid in this, evacuation centers have been identified, and an alarm system is being established along River Nyamwamba to alert communities to rising water levels. This early warning system aims to provide timely information, enabling residents to move to safer locations before disaster strikes.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to manage flood risks by addressing blocked river channels. Desilting operations are ongoing in sections of River Nyamwamba to improve water flow and prevent overflows. District Chairperson Eriphazi Muhindi emphasized the need for government support, particularly machinery, to sustain these river maintenance activities throughout the rainy season.

The district is also encouraging rainwater harvesting in urban areas to alleviate pressure on drainage systems, which often become overwhelmed during heavy downpours. Authorities are urging communities to play their part by respecting warnings, avoiding hazardous areas, and reporting potential disaster signs.

As the district steps up its preparedness, the focus remains on reducing disaster impact through early warnings, evacuation planning, river management, and community sensitization, with the hope that early action will avert loss of life and prevent further humanitarian crises.
