Lord Mayor Orders Urgent Garbage Clearance in Makindye-Salaama Amidst Health Fears

Heaps of uncollected garbage have become a pressing issue in Makindye-Salaama, Boston, Lukuli, and Luwafu, prompting an intervention from Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo. Residents had voiced strong complaints about foul smells and the potential health risks posed by the waste, which remained uncollected following a recent citywide cleanup.

During an on-site inspection, Mayor Balimwezo observed substantial piles of garbage lining the roads, underscoring the residents’ concerns. He used the opportunity to question the effectiveness and capacity of some companies contracted for waste collection within the city, suggesting that permits might be issued to firms lacking the necessary resources.

In response to the visible crisis, Balimwezo directed Homekline, a waste management company, to address the situation. Homekline subsequently deployed over 40 garbage collection trucks to clear the accumulated refuse.

The Lord Mayor also toured Homekline’s facility where biogas is produced from decomposable waste, commending the initiative as an innovative step in waste management. Homekline representatives noted that their operations are contingent on permits issued by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Dr. Sarah Zalwango, Director of Public Health, acknowledged Homekline’s advancements in waste collection while emphasizing the need for greater professionalism and discouraging under-equipped entities from engaging in waste management. Area councilor Shaban Kwezi expressed gratitude for the swift response, highlighting the relief felt by the community.

Mayor Balimwezo pledged continued collaboration with Homekline on waste management and assured the company that it would not be hindered from transporting and disposing of waste at designated sites, provided it complies with regulations. This action addresses growing concerns about waste management in Kampala’s densely populated areas.
