New Handbook Aims to Improve Employer-Domestic Help Relations in Uganda

Many working women in Uganda, much like their Kenyan counterparts, rely on domestic help to manage households and care for children, enabling them to pursue careers. However, the relationship between employers and their domestic staff often suffers from a lack of training on both sides.

Kenyan author Betty Kilonzo, herself a testament to the power of good domestic help, has penned ‘The House Help Manual.’ The book aims to serve as a comprehensive guide, akin to an HR manual or domestic policy, for employers who may not have formal training in managing household staff. Kilonzo emphasizes that the challenges and dynamics of domestic employment are largely similar in Kenya and Uganda.

Kilonzo’s personal journey, starting from a single room with a baby at 23 to becoming a successful author and professional, underscores the critical role domestic help played in her ability to rebuild her life and career. She highlights that employers often lack basic human resource management skills, while domestic workers may not receive adequate job training, leading to potential conflicts.

The manual provides practical guidance for employers, addressing issues from hiring to setting clear expectations and fostering a professional working relationship. It acknowledges that while trained domestic workers might be more expensive, they often come with established skills and an understanding of professional boundaries. The book also offers insights into effective communication and respectful treatment of domestic staff.

Kilonzo’s experience reveals that clear instructions and professional communication from employers are crucial for domestic workers. The 98-page manual, developed from years of personal experience and interviews with both staff and employers, offers solutions for creating competent and harmonious households. Kilonzo plans to follow up with a guide on how to appropriately terminate domestic employment.
