For many working professionals and families, reliable domestic help is essential for managing household responsibilities and pursuing career goals. Kenyan author Betty Kilonzo recognized a significant gap in the understanding and training for both employers and domestic workers, leading her to write “The House Help Manual.”
Kilonzo, an accomplished author and editor, shared her personal journey, highlighting how crucial good domestic help was to her own career success, especially after becoming a single mother at a young age. She emphasizes that employers are often untrained in human resource management, while domestic staff may lack formal job training, creating a recipe for potential conflict.
The manual serves as a comprehensive guide, akin to an HR manual or a household policy document. It aims to provide clear guidelines and best practices for managing domestic staff, covering aspects from hiring to daily operations. Kilonzo notes that the challenges and dynamics of domestic employment are similar in both Kenya and Uganda, making the manual relevant to a wider audience.
Kilonzo spent years gathering insights through interviews with domestic workers and their employers, as well as drawing from her own experiences. The resulting 98-page book offers practical advice on communication, professional boundaries, and mutual respect, addressing common issues such as unclear instructions and unprofessional conduct.
The book is intended for a broad audience, including domestic staff training agencies, individual households, and even hospitality businesses. Kilonzo believes that well-managed domestic help empowers individuals, particularly women, to balance career aspirations with family life, contributing to overall household competence and well-being. A follow-up book, “How to Fire Your House Help,” is also planned.
