Obongi Police Launch Manhunt for Six Armed Suspects in Robbery, Rape Case

Authorities in Obongi District are pursuing six armed suspects believed to be responsible for a heinous crime that occurred on the evening of August 31, 2026. The victim was ambushed while returning home from Konyokonyo Centre, dispossessed of Shs98,000 and had Shs700,000 transferred from her mobile money account.

According to North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Collins Asea, the assailants used high-powered firearms. After the robbery, the victim was dragged into a nearby maize garden and subjected to sexual assault. Her mobile phone was later found damaged and discarded approximately 20 meters from the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the gang operated in three coordinated sub-teams, armed with SMG rifles, a hammer, a stick, and a knife. Police have also established that the same group may be linked to other robberies in the Morobi area the previous evening.

Responding officers from Morobi and Itula Police Stations recovered the damaged phone, a small brown bag, and a spent cartridge, which has been sent for forensic analysis. The victim is receiving medical care and support.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. This incident underscores ongoing regional security concerns, with national crime reports indicating an increase in violent offenses, particularly aggravated robberies involving weapons, despite an overall drop in reported crimes in the previous year.
