Parliament Mourns Demise of Tooro King Oyo

Parliament has formally condoled with the Tooro Kingdom on the untimely passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth conveyed the House’s deep sorrow, describing the King’s demise as “deeply painful” and a loss felt across the nation.
During a session on Tuesday, 01 September 2026, Oboth eulogized the departed Omukama, stating, “In this moment of sorrow, let Parliament stand with the people of Tooro to share in their grief as they mourn a king whose life touched generations.” He further noted that the passing of a king signifies a collective mourning for a kingdom, its people, and the nation.
A motion is expected to be moved to honor King Oyo’s contributions to Tooro and Uganda. Oboth acknowledged that while King Oyo died at a young age, he lived an impactful life. “A king who came to the throne as a child has now departed. He departed far too soon. His life reminds us that the measure of a life is not only its length but the legacy it leaves behind,” the Speaker remarked.
Oboth lauded the late King’s efforts in promoting culture, tourism, and environmental conservation, recalling his climb up the Margherita peak to draw attention to the Rwenzori Mountains and climate change. The King was also recognized for his role in youth empowerment and for using international platforms to advocate for Tooro and Uganda.
The Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Rukia Nakadama, also extended condolences to the royal family and the Tooro people, lamenting the loss of a “brilliant young king” at such an early stage in his life.
Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence in tribute to the Omukama. King Oyo passed away on 27 August 2026, while receiving medical treatment in the United States. His body is scheduled to arrive in Uganda on Thursday, 03 September 2026, and will be taken to Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal District, marking the beginning of a nine-day mourning period.
