Parliament to Convene Special Sitting in Honour of Late King Oyo

The Parliament of Uganda will dedicate a special sitting this Thursday, September 3, 2026, to honour the memory and contributions of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom. The late King passed away last week at the age of 34.

This significant tribute will be a key item on the agenda for the 26th Sitting of the First Meeting of the First Session of the 12th Parliament. The motion to pay homage to the late monarch is slated as the fourth item and will be introduced by the Prime Minister. Approximately 70 minutes have been allocated for Members of Parliament to engage in debate and share their reflections.

The motion is expected to be seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, and supported by various other MPs, including Lawrence Akugizibwe (Mwenge County North), Linda Irene (Fort Portal City Woman Representative), and Spellanza Muhenda Boguma (Kyenjojo District Woman Representative).

Discussions during the sitting are anticipated to focus on King Oyo’s extensive impact on preserving Tooro’s rich culture, promoting tourism, empowering the youth, and driving development within the kingdom. His reign began in 1995 when he ascended to the throne at the tender age of three, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time. He was known for his ability to balance the preservation of tradition with the adoption of modern leadership and development strategies.

Further aspects of his legacy to be acknowledged include his work in education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and fostering unity. Following the tribute to King Oyo, Parliament will proceed with other scheduled business, including statements on the Parish Development Model and discussions on the Uganda Railways Corporation.

The special sitting will commence with prayers and official communications before moving to the tributes and subsequent legislative matters. The nation awaits further details regarding the burial arrangements for the late King, which will be announced by the Tooro Kingdom and the Government.
