Uganda’s crude oil is about to gain a distinct identity as President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to announce its official name today. This significant event, taking place at the Kingfisher Oil Development Area in Kikuube District, is intended to give Uganda’s petroleum resource international recognition and a unique brand.
Dr. Monica Musenero, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, emphasized the importance of this naming convention. “Internationally, every country has a name for its oil, and that’s what we are also going to do. It will be a great symbol for our oil resource,” she stated. The minister explained that the name will be descriptive and help differentiate Uganda’s oil from others, much like a brand name distinguishes a product.
This initiative is expected to unlock numerous opportunities for Uganda’s burgeoning oil sector. The country’s crude oil, estimated at 6.5 billion barrels of Stock Tank Oil-Initially-In-Place, is characterized by its waxy, medium-to-heavy, and sweet nature. A key challenge is its high wax content, requiring heated pipelines for transportation. Consequently, a 1,443 km heated pipeline is under construction to transport the oil from Hoima, Uganda, to Tanga, Tanzania, for export.
Uganda is poised to be the first East African nation, apart from Sudan, to commercially produce oil. The naming of the crude oil marks a pivotal moment, signifying its transition from a subterranean resource to a recognized commodity on the world stage. The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) highlighted this sentiment, stating, “This is the moment Uganda’s crude moves from being known by what it is to being known by what it is called.”
