The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda – Tooro Chapter has issued a plea for peace and solidarity within the kingdom as it undertakes the traditional processes to determine the next heir to Omukama Oyo. The late King passed away at the age of 34 while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States.
In a statement released by Rt Rev Dr Robert Muhiirwa, Bishop of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese and Chairperson of the Tooro Inter-Religious Council, the council emphasized that the transition period should uphold the sense of continuity that the late King fostered.
This call for calm arises amidst a developing succession dispute. While the Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, announced on August 27 that the King had designated a Prince as his heir, the head of the royal Babiito clan, Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, has asserted that the King did not leave an heir.
The religious leaders also urged all faith communities to come together in prayer for the late King’s soul and to provide solace to the Royal Family and the people of Tooro during this period of mourning.
King Oyo was remembered by the council as a monarch deeply devoted to serving the ‘King of kings,’ consistently showing equal respect to all religious communities. His inclusive approach, they noted, significantly bolstered harmony across the kingdom and established a strong basis for interfaith collaboration.
The council also highlighted King Oyo’s dedication to service delivery, his commitment to environmental conservation, his efforts in promoting tourism, and his emphasis on mindset change, strong family values, and youth education.
