US and Iran clash after weeks of quiet, escalating tensions

The United States and Iran engaged in their most significant military exchange in weeks, breaking a fragile lull and raising fears of a wider conflict. The confrontations followed claims of civilian casualties in Iran and denials of U.S. losses in the region. A recent wave of strikes by U.S. forces against Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps targets has ended a period of relative calm in the ongoing conflict. The U.S. Central Command announced Tuesday it had conducted strikes hitting Iranian air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications facilities.

Iranian state media reported that the country, in turn, launched attacks targeting U.S. assets in Jordan and Iraq, as well as Bahrain. However, U.S. officials have denied any casualties in Jordan, and neither Iraq nor the U.S. confirmed attacks on bases in Erbil, Iraq. Jordan’s military reported intercepting multiple ballistic missiles.

This exchange marks the first serious combat since July, interrupting a period where both sides had refrained from direct engagement, with little indication of a return to diplomatic talks. The prior lull had come as both nations faced significant strains; Iran’s economy is struggling under the weight of prolonged conflict, while the U.S. military has depleted its stockpile of long-range missiles ahead of crucial elections.

Despite the military actions, defiant rhetoric continued. U.S. President Trump expressed confidence in the U.S. position and questioned the resolve of the Iranian people. Iran’s joint military command issued a strong warning, threatening more severe responses against the U.S. and any allies assisting its military operations.

Adding to the casualties, Iranian reports indicated that five people were killed and dozens wounded in an attack near a wedding celebration on the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Red Crescent confirmed the fatalities, including a child. The U.S. has not yet commented on this specific incident, which Iran’s foreign ministry decried as part of a pattern of “atrocities.”
