Beyond the Crown: King Oyo's Hidden Dreams and Personal Passions

While King Oyo of Tooro ascended the throne at a remarkably young age of three, his life extended far beyond the royal duties and ceremonies associated with his position. Those close to him describe a monarch who was also a devoted friend, brother, and uncle, often referred to as “Uncle King.”

One of King Oyo’s most surprising aspirations, revealed by his cousin Patrick Mpuuga Akiiki, was a deep-seated dream to join the military, inspired by his grandfather. He even considered attending the prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy in Britain. However, Tooro’s cultural traditions, which hold the King as the supreme authority, presented an obstacle, as joining the national army would place him under a chain of command.

Despite this, the dream wasn’t entirely shelved. With the assistance of President Yoweri Museveni, King Oyo participated in a special two-to-three-month training program at the Sera Kasenyi Training School, an elite facility. During his time there, he immersed himself in military drills, excelling particularly in target shooting and physical fitness, proving himself a capable trainee among his peers.

Away from the formalities of his royal role, Oyo was remembered by friends and family as a humble, warm, and intellectually curious individual. Sheron Muhwezui Rukundo, who attended primary school with him, recalled his natural ability to make others feel comfortable and valued, noting his positive presence even in the classroom. His friend and brother-in-law, Paul Charles Rukundo, shared instances of Oyo enjoying ordinary experiences, like using public transport in London, away from the public eye.

King Oyo also had a passion for cars and enjoyed racing with friends, engaging with machines and embracing intellectual debates. His legacy, as remembered by Ms. Rukundo, lies not only in his reign but in his compassionate treatment of others, his strong sense of family, his faith, and the grace he consistently extended to those around him.
