Buganda Kingdom Applauds UNESCO and Japan for Cultural Heritage Restoration

The Buganda Kingdom has officially commended UNESCO and the Government of Japan for their significant contributions to the preservation and restoration of its cherished cultural heritage sites. This praise comes as the Kingdom prepares for the highly anticipated official reopening of the Kasubi Royal Tombs.
Speaking on behalf of Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Minister for Information Israel Kazibwe Kitooke highlighted the crucial role of this support. He recalled the 2010 fire that damaged the Kasubi Tombs, emphasizing the Kingdom’s dedication to its restoration. Kitooke noted the international recognition of these efforts, with the tombs being removed from UNESCO’s list of endangered sites following substantial progress.
The ongoing restoration work has been widely embraced, and the Kingdom is now focused on the official reopening, aligning with the wishes of His Majesty the Kabaka. A recent ceremony to prepare the site, involving grass cutting, marked a step closer to this goal.
Prince David Kintu Wasajja urged Ugandans to embrace and take pride in their rich culture and traditions. He also mentioned a new photographic project at the royal tombs, aimed at educating the public about the history of the Ssekabakas (former Kings of Buganda).
The Director General of the Buganda Tourism Board, Najib Nsubuga, added that the recently launched UNESCO-supported project would extend benefits to local communities surrounding heritage sites, creating economic opportunities.
Representatives from UNESCO and the Japanese Embassy reiterated their commitment. Judith Ogana from UNESCO emphasized the educational importance of cultural heritage, while Deputy Ambassador Yoshida Norimasa of Japan confirmed continued support for protecting these invaluable sites. Japan has previously assisted the Kasubi Tombs with fire prevention and detection systems.
This collaborative effort, involving various stakeholders from the Buganda Kingdom, government, and international organizations, was celebrated at a project launch event in Kampala.
