Buganda Urges Unity in Tooro Amidst Succession Uncertainty

The Kingdom of Buganda, through its Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, has extended a message of solidarity and urged for tranquility in Tooro Kingdom. This appeal comes at a sensitive time as Tooro mourns the demise of its monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru.
During a visit to the late king’s residence in Buziga, Kampala, Mayiga conveyed the Kabaka’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of unity and composure for the people of Tooro during this period of grief. “When I broke the news of Omukama’s passing to Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi, he told me to call upon the people of Tooro to remain united and calm during this period of grief,” Mayiga stated.
This call for calm is particularly pertinent given the emerging uncertainties surrounding the royal succession. Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding the existence of an heir, with some royal clan representatives expressing unawareness of a successor, while others have indicated the late king left behind a young prince. These divergent accounts have fueled public discussion and raised questions about the continuity of the kingdom.
Mayiga further advised Tooro’s leaders to prioritize the interests of the kingdom above any personal or group agendas, stressing that “The interests of Tooro Kingdom should supersede those of any individuals or groups.”
He also paid tribute to King Oyo, who reigned for 31 years and passed away at the age of 34, acknowledging his ambitious vision for his kingdom and its youth. The body of the late King Oyo is expected to arrive in Uganda shortly before being transported to Tooro for traditional funeral rites, with burial scheduled after nine days of mourning.
Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Busoga has also joined in calling for calm and unity in Tooro, postponing its own coronation anniversary celebrations as a sign of solidarity. The Tooro Kingdom flag is flying at half-mast at the Buziga residence, where various dignitaries continue to pay their respects to the departed monarch.
