Busia Residents Battle Insecticide-Resistant Bedbugs, Appeal for Government Help

Residents in several villages within Busia Municipality, including Mbale Kidogo, Solo B, and Mawero, are at their wit’s end. For years, they have battled an unrelenting bedbug problem, with conventional insecticide sprays failing to provide any lasting relief. Despite multiple applications and even communal cleaning efforts, the pests continue to thrive, causing significant distress and discomfort.
The widespread failure of standard treatments has sparked concerns about insecticide resistance, a phenomenon scientifically documented in bedbug populations. Studies indicate that bedbugs can develop resistance to common chemicals like pyrethroids through various biological mechanisms, rendering many commercially available products ineffective. Some research has shown that resistance levels can be so high that concentrations thousands of times greater than normal are needed to kill the pests.
Local officials acknowledge the issue, with some attributing it to poor sanitation and inadequate garbage collection. However, scientific understanding suggests that while hygiene plays a role, it is not the sole factor. Bedbugs primarily reside in sleeping areas and can spread through the movement of infested items. Residents are experiencing constant bites, leading to worries about potential skin health issues. Some long-time residents, like 78-year-old Elizabeth Mpima, find sleep almost impossible due to the persistent presence of these insects.
In response, public health experts recommend an integrated pest management approach. This strategy combines chemical treatments with non-chemical methods such as thorough inspections, vacuuming, steam cleaning, and appropriate heat treatments. The goal is to reduce reliance on insecticides and slow the development of resistance. Busia town’s deputy mayor has apologized for waste management challenges and urged residents to maintain hygiene while authorities work on improving collection services.
