Fort Portal City Gears Up for King Oyo's Remains with Major Clean-Up

Fort Portal City is abuzz with activity as a comprehensive clean-up and beautification drive takes place. The city is preparing to receive the remains of the late Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with his body scheduled to arrive in Uganda on Friday.
Major thoroughfares, especially those leading to Karuziika Palace and the royal tombs, are being meticulously cleaned. This effort includes garbage removal, planting of trees and flowers, and painting of walkways. The initiative, which commenced on Monday, aims to present a welcoming environment for the expected influx of mourners and dignitaries during the funeral ceremonies.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, confirmed the arrival details, stating that the King’s remains will reach Uganda on Friday before being transported to Fort Portal. Parliament will hold a tribute session on Thursday, with Friday dedicated to receiving the King’s body.
The city’s facelift is also a tribute to King Oyo’s legacy as an advocate for environmental conservation. Elizabeth Kegonzi, deputy mayor of Fort Portal Central Division, highlighted the King’s efforts in protecting River Mpanga and promoting green initiatives. “The King was an advocate for the environment and we have planted many trees around town to remember him,” Kegonzi stated, emphasizing the need for lasting cleanliness.
Enhancements are also visible along key routes, such as Kyebambe Road, with improved pedestrian crossings and decorative elements. Portraits of the late King and potted flowers adorn various locations, while unique 3D paintings along the Fort Portal Secondary School-Kabudaire road further commemorate his contributions.
At Karuziika Palace, preparations are in full swing. The access road has been tarmacked, drainage systems improved, and additional tents erected to accommodate the anticipated large number of mourners who will pay their final respects.
