Katikkiro Mayiga: Culture is the Foundation of Society

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga of the Buganda Kingdom has articulated that culture serves as the fundamental basis for societal aspirations, asserting its crucial role in defining individual and collective identities.

During a recent meeting with representatives from Ipsos, a global market research firm, at Bulange Mengo, Mayiga elaborated on how culture extends beyond mere traditional practices. He explained that cultural elements, such as clan affiliations, shape personal identity, family relationships, and social responsibilities within the kingdom.

“Culture defines everything around us,” Mayiga stated, noting that in Buganda, clan names often provide immediate insight into a person’s lineage and social connections, influencing practices like marriage. The Kabaka’s influence is also leveraged to mobilize resources and support for socio-economic advancement.

Mayiga further highlighted the importance of communication platforms, including radio and digital media, in preserving Buganda’s heritage and promoting initiatives aimed at improving public welfare. These channels are utilized to foster economic partnerships and collaborations.

He also stressed culture’s function as a unifying force in contemporary society. The Kabaka’s Birthday Run was cited as an example of how cultural events can rally communities around significant social causes, such as health awareness, demonstrating culture’s practical application in enhancing well-being.

Representatives from Ipsos expressed keen interest in supporting Buganda Kingdom’s strategic objectives, particularly in areas like agriculture, cultural preservation, and business development, including initiatives for the diaspora. They noted a strong alignment between their expertise and the kingdom’s focus on planning, implementation, and evaluation.
