Ntara HC IV in Kitagwenda Set for Upgrade to Community Hospital

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced that Ntara Health Centre IV in Kitagwenda District is being considered for an upgrade to a community hospital. This initiative is part of a larger government plan to establish 100 community hospitals nationwide.

The decision follows concerns raised by Kitagwenda County MP Robert Mugabe regarding insufficient health service delivery in the district. Nabbanja highlighted that the absence of adequate health facilities across Kitagwenda’s sub-counties exacerbates the situation.

Ntara Health Centre IV is being prioritized for the first phase of this program. The upgrade will see its capacity increase from the current 24 beds to 60 beds, bringing specialized and emergency medical services closer to the local population.

The Ministry of Health has already assessed Ntara HC IV against key criteria, including the district’s lack of a hospital and the long distance to the nearest referral facility in Fort Portal. The facility meets the necessary threshold for consideration.

While Ntara HC IV is slated for the first phase, the final selection and sequencing of all 100 community hospitals will be determined through a national prioritization process involving the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance. These priorities will be reflected in the 2027/2028 national budget.

In the interim, the government will enhance Ntara HC IV’s capacity for emergency obstetric and surgical care to manage critical cases while the upgrading process is underway. Currently, Kitagwenda District, with 13 sub-counties, has only four Health Centre IIIs and one Health Centre IV, forcing residents to travel approximately 115 kilometers for specialized treatment.

This upgrade is expected to significantly reduce the burden on patients, especially expectant mothers and those with emergencies, who currently face arduous journeys for essential medical care.
