Minister of Water and Environment, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, has urged for enhanced international cooperation to combat climate change, highlighting that environmental problems in one nation can impact others.
Otafiire articulated that climate change must be viewed as a collective undertaking, as actions taken in any part of the world can have repercussions across different countries and regions. “Guiding the planet is a shared responsibility,” he stated, underscoring the necessity for collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges.
The minister also advocated for a more prominent voice for African nations in global environmental discussions. He cautioned against one-size-fits-all solutions, stressing that strategies must be tailored to the diverse circumstances of various countries and regions, rather than imposing rigid frameworks.
His remarks coincide with escalating global initiatives aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving ecosystems, and securing funding for climate action. Otafiire encouraged stakeholders to explore how environmental resources can be leveraged to support atmospheric protection and climate change mitigation efforts.
He further advised that countries should not solely concentrate on the negative impacts of environmental degradation but also consider the potential of natural resources to drive sustainable development. Otafiire exhorted participants to think creatively, developing innovative approaches that enable Africa to confront environmental challenges while capitalizing on its natural wealth.
It is important to note that the minister clarified these views were personal and not necessarily indicative of official government policy. Separately, Kenneth Muhangi of the Carbon Markets Association of Uganda called for simplified regulations to facilitate broader Ugandan participation in carbon markets and advocated for the development of robust domestic carbon markets over reliance on foreign investment.
