Police Operation "Ganyegenya" Shows Positive Results in Taxi Safety Enforcement

The “Ganyegenya” operation, launched on August 24, 2026, by the Uganda Police Force, is targeting taxis operating with significant mechanical defects. This initiative involves impounding vehicles deemed unsafe, removing their number plates, and mandating repairs at designated garages before they can be re-inspected and allowed back on the road.

Traffic police are employing a dynamic strategy, deploying officers to various locations for short durations. This method aims to prevent drivers from anticipating and avoiding checkpoints, a common occurrence when police presence remains static for extended periods. The unpredictability of enforcement is key to the operation’s effectiveness.

Superintendent of Police Charlotte Ndyahabwe, stationed at Wakiso Police Station, reported that the crackdown has prompted many taxi operators to address the mechanical issues with their vehicles. Speaking on a local television program, she noted a visible effort by drivers to bring their taxis up to standard.

However, Ndyahabwe also issued a warning against overloading taxis with luggage. She advised drivers to utilize trucks for transporting bulky items, emphasizing that overloading taxis can lead to charges of 200,000 Ugandan Shillings. This measure is intended to prevent strain on vehicle mechanics and ensure passenger safety.

Passengers have also been urged to support the operation by not boarding overloaded or mechanically unsound vehicles. Furthermore, the public is encouraged to report accidents promptly and to avoid spreading misinformation, instead contacting emergency services for swift assistance.

This operation is being conducted to improve road safety and reduce accidents often attributed to poorly maintained public transport vehicles.
