Serenity Centre Celebrates 25 Years of Combating Addiction, Empowering Women

Serenity Centre, located in Kabulamuliro Parish, Wakiso District, recently commemorated a significant milestone: 25 years of dedicated service in rehabilitating and supporting individuals affected by drug and alcohol addiction. The anniversary event, themed “Empowering and Nurturing Women to Overcome Addiction,” drew a diverse crowd including religious leaders, government officials, former clients, and supporters.

Bishop Lambert Bainomugisha of Mbarara officiated a Holy Mass, advocating for greater public support and less stigma towards those facing addiction and mental health challenges. He emphasized that recovery is possible with proper treatment, patience, and care, urging individuals not to lose hope.

Emmanuel Mubangizi, the founder of Serenity Centre, reflected on the centre’s humble beginnings with just five clients, highlighting its growth into a vital resource for many struggling with substance abuse. He stated the centre’s mission is to offer a pathway to recovery and life rebuilding for those affected.

Representing President Museveni, Minister of State for Health, Anifah Bangirana, affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting rehabilitation efforts. She presented a contribution of Shs20 million to the centre. The Minister also launched a book detailing addiction treatment approaches and initiated a fundraising campaign for a new multi-purpose building dedicated to women recovering from addiction.

The anniversary serves as a testament to Serenity Centre’s achievements and a renewed commitment to addressing substance abuse. The centre’s leadership stressed the necessity of ongoing collaboration between government, religious bodies, communities, and rehabilitation organizations to provide a second chance for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives.
