Traders Seek PLU Intervention on Business Woes

Traders from Kampala, Jinja, and other regions have formally appealed to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leadership, seeking their intervention in a range of business-related issues. The concerns were presented at the PLU Secretariat in Naguru.

A primary issue raised by the traders is the significant delay in accessing financial assistance that was previously promised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. This aid was intended for businesses severely impacted by recent floods.

Many traders reported that the floods not only destroyed their businesses but also completely wiped out their capital, making it incredibly difficult to resume operations. They are urging the PLU to follow up with the relevant government bodies to ensure the promised support reaches them swiftly.

Beyond flood recovery, traders expressed frustration over what they termed unnecessary obstacles hindering their daily business operations. They emphasized that their enterprises are vital for supporting their families and providing employment to others.

Further complicating matters, Ugandan traders highlighted instances of mistreatment and difficulties encountered at Entebbe International Airport. This is particularly concerning for those who actively support the national airline, Uganda Airlines, and feel undervalued at their own country’s airport.

In response, PLU Deputy Secretary General Henry Mutegeki Basaliza assured the delegation that the organization would actively engage with the responsible authorities to address their concerns. He noted that the presence of the Minister of Trade within the PLU leadership provides a direct channel for these issues to be handled effectively.

The traders also discussed broader economic challenges affecting sectors like fishing and reiterated their commitment to supporting national development programs, provided their immediate business hurdles are resolved.

This appeal underscores the critical need for timely government support and a conducive business environment for Ugandan entrepreneurs to thrive and contribute to the nation’s economy.
