The Ministry of Health is set to host a national mental health run on October 11, 2026, at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Nakawa Grounds. Under the theme “Run for Your Mind, Break the Silence and the Stigma,” the event aims to foster broader public engagement with mental health issues and dismantle the persistent stigma associated with mental illness.

Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi highlighted that beyond raising awareness, the run is a crucial initiative for mobilizing resources. These funds will be directed towards enhancing critical mental health infrastructure. Specifically, proceeds will support the expansion of the outpatient department at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, including the construction of a much-needed shelter for patients. Additionally, resources are targeted for the establishment of an alcohol and drug abuse unit at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

Dr. Charles Akiya, Commissioner for Health Services (Non-Communicable Diseases), pointed out the escalating burden of mental health conditions in Uganda. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and stress from education and displacement are contributing significantly. He noted that mental health challenges affect all age groups and societal strata.

While Uganda has established mental health services across various levels of healthcare facilities, significant challenges remain. These include a shortage of specialized personnel, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential medicines. The funding allocated to mental health, currently around one percent of the total health budget, is also a concern.

Dr. Akiya stressed the need for a multisectoral approach to effectively address the nation’s mental health challenges, acknowledging that many contributing factors lie beyond the Ministry of Health’s direct purview. The upcoming run is envisioned as a key platform to encourage open dialogue about mental health and galvanize support from civil society, development partners, communities, and other sectors to bolster treatment and support services nationwide.
