UMSC Encourages Muslim Youth to Embrace Entrepreneurship for Job Creation

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has issued a strong call to action for Muslim youth across Uganda, encouraging them to harness their skills and networks to create their own business opportunities rather than solely relying on securing formal employment.

Hajji Mulubya Abas, UMSC Secretary General, stressed the critical need for young people to engage in entrepreneurship and skill acquisition. He highlighted that this proactive approach is vital for both personal development and significant economic contribution to the nation.

“When helping the youths, they should also fight for themselves. This will help them succeed and at the same time contribute to Uganda’s economy,” Hajji Mulubya stated, underscoring the urgency of addressing youth unemployment.

With approximately 75 percent of Uganda’s Muslim population under the age of 30, UMSC recognizes this demographic as a key focus for socioeconomic attention. Habib Mustafa, Chairman of the UMSC Youth Council, criticized leaders who offer mere rhetoric without tangible action. He called for practical interventions to tackle issues like poverty, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, radicalization, and unemployment.

“Youths in Uganda need their issues to be addressed practically. Most leaders keep talking about issues that affect them without addressing them on the ground,” Habib remarked.

This initiative precedes the National Muslim Youth Convention 2026, slated for October 28-29. The convention aims to bring together various stakeholders, including youth, religious leaders, government officials, and private sector players. The event will feature a Muslim Youth Expo and Halal Business Forum, providing a platform for young innovators to showcase ventures in sectors like agriculture, technology, education, and skilling.

“The initiative is intended to provide young people with skills, mentorship, and opportunities to improve their livelihoods and participate more actively in national development,” explained Sheikh Kasim Kamugisha, Patron of the National Muslim Youth Council. The convention will also see the inauguration of the Muslim Youth Council Assembly and the launch of the National Muslim Youth Skilling, Rehabilitation, De-radicalisation, and Empowerment Centres Initiative.
